Radical Agency in the Classroom: SEL as Social Justice
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:30am - 12:00pm PDT
245
In July 2024, Oregon mandated a Transformative Social Emotional Learning (TSEL) framework and standards for all classrooms. This is a unique and vibrant opportunity to create justice-based classrooms at all grade levels, and in teacher education itself. In this workshop, participants will learn effective SEL frameworks and engaging activities — and then how to connect those ideas to building a classroom of student agency, critical thought, and asset-based learning for all of their diverse learners.

Speaking for Ourselves: Resisting Organized Bigotry at School
Saturday October 26, 2024 1:00pm - 2:30pm PDT
245
Schools have become battlegrounds and recruitment sites for bigoted groups targeting young people. Although it’s not students’ responsibility to counter bigotry, they have a critical voice and the power to organize. This workshop is designed for educators and students interested in understanding and countering organized bigotry within schools. Participants will learn about how bigoted groups target schools and youth, and they will apply organizing strategies such as base-building, messaging, and power-mapping to real-world scenarios. Using content from the new student-facing toolkit by the Western States Center, attendees will engage in interactive activities, discussions, and scenario-based group work.
